Little Things Make Big Things Happen
John Wooden was one of the greatest college coaches ever.
Although not included in the top ten Division 1 coaches with the most wins (he was actually number 42 at the end of the 2021-22 season), he did manage to win 10 championships in just 12 years.
He holds the record with 7 of those championship titles being “in a row.” And 3 of the seasons they were undefeated.
So, when he says, “Little Things Make Big Things Happen,” we should probably listen.
This holds true for workplace safety and compliance.
Reminding someone today to work safe could just save their life.
Making sure you have the right tool to complete the job safely could prevent an accident.
Going down the ladder to move it over a foot instead of hopping the ladder to reach something could prevent that ladder from going over with you on it.
Reminding someone about the value of working safely when you see them doing something in an unsafe manner could prevent the day from ending in disaster.
I could keep going, but I hope I’ve made my point.
Sure, you still need to develop and implement your company safety program, train employees, and monitor them to make sure work is being performed in a safe manner. But those little things throughout the day that remind all of us about the value of workplace safety are what keep everyone on track and send them home at the end of the day, safe and sound.
Why not try it? It worked for one of the greatest college basketball coaches ever and it doesn’t take a lot of effort. The payoff or ROI is priceless.
