OSHA Says

Employers must:

• Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under the OSH Act.
• Examine workplace conditions to make sure they conform to applicable OSHA standards.
• Make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment and properly maintain this equipment.
• Warn employees of potential hazards.
• Establish or update operating procedures and communicate them so that employees follow safety and health requirements.
• Employers must provide safety training in a language and vocabulary workers can understand.

Employees Must:

• Comply with the standards, rules, regulations, and orders issued by his/her agency in accordance with section 19 of the Act, Executive Order 12196, and this part which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
• Use safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and other devices and procedures provided or directed by the agency and necessary for their protection.

You see when it comes to workplace safety the OSH Act is The Law.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but it is.

But more important than that, if you go back and read each of the responsibilities, they just make sense.

Now, look at them one more time without thinking about them as The Law. They make sense, right?

For safety to become a reality at any workplace everyone must take responsibility and do their part.

So, remember this when you’re at work this week. The Law says you have certain responsibilities when it comes to workplace safety, but more important, your safety and that of others at your workplace relies on you doing your part.
